Long-term use of hormonal contraceptives is associated with an increased risk of brain tumors

Taking a hormonal contraceptive towards at least five years is associated by a possible increase in a young woman’s dare to undertake of developing a rare tumour, glioma of the brain. This throw focussed on women aged 15-49 years and the tools and materials are published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology.

Hormonal contraceptives, including vocal contraceptives, contain female sex hormones and are widely used ~ means of women all over the world. While merely a little is known about the causes of glioma and other brain tumours, there is some evidence that female sex hormones may enlarge the risk of some cancer types, grant that there is also evidence that contraceptive conversion to an act may reduce the risk in never-failing age groups. “This prompted us to evaluate whether using hormonal contraceptives strength influence the risk of gliomas in women of the a hundred years range who use them,” says inquiry team leader Dr David Gaist of the Odense University Hospital and University of Southern Denmark.

In this contrivance, the researchers drew data from Denmark’s general administrative and health registries, enabling them to become identical all the women in Denmark who were between 15 and 49 years of duration of existence and had a first-time diagnosis of glioma between 2000 and 2009. They found 317 cases and compared cropped land of these women with eight century-matched women who didn’t hold gliomas.

“It is material to keep this apparent increase in jeopard in context,” says Dr Gaist. “In a populousness of women in the reproductive age, including those who use hormonal contraceptives, you would get the start of seeing 5 in 100,000 the vulgar develop a glioma annually, according to the nationwide Danish Cancer Registry.”

“While we ground a statistically significant association between hormonal contraceptive use and glioma risk, a risk-befriend evaluation would still favour the appliance of hormonal contraceptives in eligible users,” says Dr Gaist, who points deficient in that it is important to accomplish on evaluating long-term contraceptive conversion to an act in order to help women elect the best contraception for them.

Dr Gaist likewise emphasizes that the findings need to subsist interpreted with care, as discussed in the published scrutiny paper. “Despite that, we feel our study is each important contribution and we hope that our findings will spark further research on the affinity between female hormonal agents and glioma peril,” he says.
