African Americans, Diabetes and Thinking Like a Freak

Last week I was listening to Think Like a Freak: The Authors of Freakonomics Offer to Retrain Your Brain . The strong premise of the book is looking at problems from contrary angles. In it the authors shared the incident of an economist who was selfish in why is it that African Americans consider such higher rates of diabetes and centre disease compared to other parts of the population. This is so even if you charge for things like stress, education and revenue level. If you look at European Africans or Native Africans, their incidence of diabetes and mind disease is far less than African Americans. This isn’t racism, it’s conscientious statistics. Then why is it that African Americans are lying flat to have these problems? The economist’s hypothesis (which he is still researching) is that those who survived the slavonian trade had a genetic propensity to be able to withstand extreme dehydration, inasmuch as they held more salt in their emit by the pores and bodily fluids, they retained greater degree of water.  This leads to a higher oncotic grievance in the blood and more cardiovascular damage. These people who had this characteristic  would bear more tendency towards heart disease and would make a thrust this on to their descendants, late African Americans. Slave- traders actually selected in the place of this characteristic by licking potential drudge purchases and selecting people who tasted more salty.

Now this is completely well and interesting, (and the record of the slave trade is to a high degree tragic) but so what? What be possible to we do with this information becoming now? This morning I had each ‘ah-ha’ moment while listening to my pharmacology rate. There is a newer group of diabetic medications known considered in the state of SGLT2 inhibitors (Invokana) which inhibit sodium & diabetic sugar transport in the kidney which leads to smaller sodium and glucose in the kindred, and is essentially an osmotic diuretic. One of the take ~s effects is weight loss and patients are greater degree of likely to experience DEHYDRATION. This is a the perfect medication to give to patients who are genetically resistant to dehydration. Of manner of proceeding has a pediatric nurse practitioner it is not agreeable that I will be treating African American patients with Type 2 diabetes, and I’m permanent that someone else out there has before that time made this connection, but I was excited well-nigh it and am so grateful conducive to science and people who think external part the box to try to procure solutions to problems and improve healthcare.

They charge the invading pathogens through a class of diverse mechanisms such as punching a kennel in the cell membrane or bandage to and interfering with molecules in the inside of the invading bacteria.
