On 17 June 2012, a Saudi Arabian Blogger Raif Badawi was arrested in a state of being liable to the charge of “insulting Islam”. Raif Badawi had created “Free Saudi Liberals”, a website that encouraged debates on religious and politic issues in 2008. The website promoted the archetype of secularism and criticized religious extremism. He was charged of contumelious Islam through this website.

The Saudi Supreme Court held him criminal and pronounced a sentence of 10 years in penitentiary, 1000 lashes (50 lashes on each Friday) and a fine of 1 million riyals. After he serves a decade in bridewell, he is also forbidden to take a journey for the following decade and from participating in the media.

He had been beforehand charged for “apostasy” in 2008 during the time that well but was released after questioning. “Apostasy” which means renunciation of one’s that which binds us to the practice of righteousness is chargeable with death sentence in Saudi Arabia. In 2012, the prosecutors wanted to charge him below apostasy as well but in 2013, he was cleared toward it. According to sources, he may front the charge of apostasy again.

Raif Badawi is undergoing the punishment for the charge of “insolent Islam”. He is imprisoned. He had admitted the first 50 lashes in January. But considering his wounds remain unhealed, the penalty has not been repeated.

Badawi has defend from the international community. He receives base from the United Nations, United States, the European Union, Canada and divers other countries. Human Rights Activists and Organisations right and left the globe have expressed their perform with him. In January 2015, the United Nations had issued a ultimate-minute appeal to Saudi Arabia to make an end of the scheduled second round of flogging with a view to the activist. They had also appealed the Saudi Government to criticise this type of penalty. However, the Government dead body unmoved. While the punishment is substance delayed, there is no news of at all relief. Infact, the Saudi officials accept asked the international community not to “interfere” in the ‘internal’ matters of the countrified.

Badawi’s case is or should be for everyone who speaks and respects “Freedom of Speech”, “Secularism” and “Justice”. Here’s for what cause we all should support him and require his immediate release:

Right to Freedom of Speech and Expression

Freedom of Speech and Expression is individual of the most important rights given to every individual. It is one of the of moment rights given in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the part 19 of which states,

“Everyone has the fair to freedom of opinion and lively representation; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to search, receive and impart information and ideas through somewhat media and regardless of frontiers.”

It applies to completely member countries of United Nations. Since Saudi Arabia is a member country, it is applicable for it to the degree that well. Going by this, Raif did zero wrong. He has the right to freely set forth himself and to have an opinion. As the right mentions, he in like manner had the right to seek advice, learn from other sources regardless of the frontiers and this is which he had done. No Government should try to describe the boundaries of knowledge.

Badawi has the not crooked to think and decide for himself. He has the suitable to form his own opinion, select what he may believe in. His website conducted debates in c~tinuance different issues. It cannot be regarded to have existence illegal and unacceptable. What is displeasing is the behavior of the Saudi Government to circumscribe knowledge. Controlling freedom of speech, refuse is a mark of autocratic and unregulated states, not modern nation-states.

There is a strife between “Insult” and being “Critical”

Badawi has been accused of “vituperative Islam” but how has he terminated so? There are no concrete evidences available to prove that he had “insulted” Islam. There is a difference between insulting and being critical and the latter cannot be regarded to be unlicensed or objectionable. Everyone has the straight to be critical. It is serious to understand and know what exactly had Badawi said that is considered to be to counter-poise Islam. What was objectionable? Was his direction of motion of holding a debate over holy practices objectionable? If yes, then this true thinking is against Islam. Islam was born not at home of questionings, as a response to the contemporaneous sociopolitical situation. Islam is rational in its essence. Every practice that Prophet Mohammad had ascribed was given through reasons which were clearly specified. This method meant that he wanted that humbler classes should know why a certain habitual doing has been prescribed. The underlying influence seems to be to challenge careless acceptance and to promote thinking and soundness of mind. Thus, debates cannot be considered to have existence un-Islamic. Debates to think nearly the religious practice, to explore the faithful essence of islam cannot become disagreeable. A true Muslim who knows end for end the life and teachings of Prophet Mohammad force of ~ know it.

Prophet Mohammad laid downward several practices and they all responded to the peculiar conditions at that time. The overarching empiricism was to promote peace and justiciary. Even if Badawi may have challenged more of the practices, he did such by being under the ideological paradigms of Islam. So he could not be the subject of “insulted” Islam. He may consider been critical which is allowed not solely by the Universal Right to Freedom of Opinion only by Islam itself.

His writings targeted extremism, not Islam

As hither and thither the claims, it is again important to re-iterate the fact that not at all concrete evidences are available to point out how he had “insulted Islam”. His website was coop up down. What remains are some of his writings that consider appeared in other websites. What emerges from his writings are his declination of extremism of all sorts. He had not insulted islam, he had insulted extremism, blind following that as stated earlier, is antithesis to the force of Islam. Here are some extracts from his writings:

On the Israel-Palestine outcome, Badawi wrote, “I’m not in encouragement of the Israeli occupation of some Arab country, but at the sort time I do not want to refund Israel by a religious state … whose entire concern would be spreading the civilization of death and ignorance among its the vulgar when we need modernisation and chance of a favorable result. States based on religious ideology … bring forth nothing except the fear of God and one inability to face up to life. Look at that which had happened after the European peoples succeeded in removing the the cloth from public life and restricting them to their churches. They built up human beings and (promoted) enlightenment, creativity and rebellion. States which are based up~ religion confine their people in the orb of faith and fear” (Source: http://www.theguardian.com/nature/2015/jan/14/-sp-saudi-blogger-extracts-raif-badawi)

In one more account, Badawi wrote on an impinging in which an astronomer was punished ~ward the grounds of being critical of sharia beliefs,

“I give counsel to NASA to abandon its telescopes and, instead, turn to our Sharia astronomers, whose caustic vision and insight surpass the agency’s unfashionable telescopes. Indeed, I advise all other scholars the creation over, of whatever discipline, to yield their studies, laboratories, research centres, places of experimentation, universities, institutes etc. and grand at once to the study groups of our superb preachers to learn from them wholly about modern medicine, engineering, chemistry, microbiology, geology, nuclear physics, the science of the atom, soldier sciences, the science of explosives, pharmacology, anthropology etc. – side by side astronomy, of course. God bless them! They be under the necessity shown themselves to be the ultimate authority with the decisive word in everything, which all mankind must accept, submit to and obey free from hesitation or discussion.” (Source: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jan/14/-sp-saudi-blogger-extracts-raif-badawi)

Through his writings, Badawi had criticized persecution of other religions in Saudi Arabia and the conservatism of Saudi Clerics, their attitude towards secularism.

This is not to dispute that all his writings were unproblematic limit what is true is that his larger ideas were direct. There were no false claims. A dart at the Saudi Arab’s human rights memoir can testify it.

More importantly exactly if his ideas were problematic, his writings were person-sided or biased, the fact is that they were but articles. They were also not stimulant. He also did not have the corresponding; of like kind authority as Saudi clerics did. Unlike them, he could not sending out any fatwas to impose his inspect.

Death sentence for ‘Apostasy’ is gaudy

The Saudi authorities are wearisome to charge Badawi for apostasy on this account that which he can be granted decease sentence. Badawi would not be the elementary to be the victim for defection. Saudi Arabia has a terrible note of executing people. As reported ~ dint of. Amnesty, Saudi Arabia ranks among the highest part five executioners in the world. In 2014, 90 persons were executed. So far in this year, 54 canaille have been reportedly executed in the pristine three months of 2015. (Source: https://www.amnesty.org/en/articles/blogs/2015/04/the-end-punishment-saudi-arabia-ramps-up-beheadings-in-the-realm / ) Apostasy is one of the overpower charges for execution. Apostasy means the disownment of one’s faith and transmutation to another.

Simply put, it is a coarse practice. Everyone has the right to regard and decide for oneself. Secondly, it again cannot be a rule that may be in possession of been given by Prophet Mohammad. The rationalist that he was, he would not be delivered of forced people to follow his teachings. He wanted men to follow his teachings by understanding them, their importance. Prophet Mohammad was in addition not opposed to people of other religions. His teachings did stamp a deviation from them but he had not permitted the use of violence against them.

Killing the bulk of mankind over their religious beliefs is un-Islamic and pitiless. More importantly, if one is faithfully religious, one will know that that which binds us to the practice of righteousness is a sacred thing. All religions educate the same thing. They teach have affection for, justice and humanity. Only a body who is not familiar with his/her practical piety will fight over it. Religion is not every identity, it is a belief. If someone does not convinced in or follow the religious practices, in what plight does it matter if he/she is a imitator or not?

A last epigram is that by giving death decision or lashes as punishment, will the nobleness of Islam be established? Will the multitude who do not believe or prize Islam start respecting it? There are greater good and more civil ways to own people that what they are thinking is wrong. Violence is never the dis~.

Badawi punished for opposing Saudi Arab sanction, not Islam

Saudi Arabia has unit of the worst human rights’ register. The Saudi Arab authorities severely restrain freedom of expression, impose censorship, obtain discriminating laws against women and non-muslims, be under the necessity detained and sentenced without trial, many Government critics and political activists. Badawi had written relating to this at length. He had particularly criticized the government for suppressing dissent. There is a possibility that Saudi Arabian commanding scholars have suppressed Badawi not for his views held to have existence against Islam but against itself. The be wanting of concrete evidence as well in the same proportion that the writings of Badawi hint at it.

Badawi’s event, thus, needs to be seen in a greater amount of complex way and should be supported by anyone who supports Freedom of Speech, Secularism and understands Islam. While Badawi’s contingency is not the first case, in that place is a chance to make it the after all the rest one or move towards a in a more excellent way tomorrow.
