Basics of Pharmacology I – Characteristics of Drugs

Pharmacology, oh pharmacology. Truly, very a challenging field to master. Do I veritably have to know ALL these physic names? 

But not to worry, mastering pharmacology comes through mastering the basics of this opportunity.

For those of you who don’t be assured of, pharmacology is a very broad time that refers to the study of substances that interact with living systems through chemical processes. These chemical processes be possible to be triggered especially due to sum of ~ units major mechanisms:

Activating or inhibiting according to rule body processes.

Binding to regulatory molecules.

Furthermore, these substances that influence these chemical reactions can either be the subject of:

Therapeutic Effects, by disrupting some negative step occuring in the patient.

Toxic movables, as used by parasites on their vast assemblage.  

That’s right, pharmacology isn’t everything the drugs we all assume it to have existence – it literally includes any substance that have power to act on the body, therapeutic or toxic. 

Thus, it is weighty to specify what we mean exactly, through pharmacology. 

The study of the therapeutic portion of pharmacology is referred to as medical pharmacology, which is the philosophical knowledge of substances used to prevent, diagnose and behave to a particular illness.  


In striking difference, the study of the toxic or objectionable effects of substances on individual cells or complete ecosystems is toxicology. 


However, remember that even supposing toxicology probably makes you think not far from poisons and parasites, any substance, fair those intended to be therapeutic drugs, be possible to be toxic in high amounts.

But wait, that which do these drugs act on? Drugs act without interrupti~ a regulator molecule, known as a receptor, that literally receives the agonist or adversary molecule, and sends the signal to the material part system it regulates, changing it to the propensity of the agonist (activate) or adverse party (inhibit).
