PARIS: Paracetamol, a low over-the-counter pain-reliever, does not moil in the treatment of osteoarthritis, a knot disorder afflicting tens of millions of somewhat old people, according to a study released yesterday.

When taken without ceasing its own to alleviate pain or raise mobility, the drug was found to be only marginally — and insignificantly — with greater advantage than a dummy pill, according to a liberal survey of 74 clinical trials integument nearly 60,000 patients.

“Our results intimate that paracetamol at any dose is not cogent in managing pain in osteoarthritis,” said Sven Trelle, the main architect of the meta-study and a researcher at the University of Bern in Switzerland.

Trelle and colleagues evaluated eight unlike non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs, taken individually in various doses and in combination with other medications.

The remedy that worked best for arthritis, they base, was diclofenac, sold in different countries under the brand names Voltaren, Aclonac and Cataflam.

The results were published in the healing journal The Lancet.

It occurs when the protective gristle on the ends of bones wears from a high to a low position over time, causing acute stiffness and aggrieve.

The most common joints affected are in the hands, knees, hips and ridge.

The condition gradually worsens, and in ~ degree cure exists.

Among people over the a hundred years of 60, it affects about 18 through cent of women and 9.5 by means of cent of men.

“This verdict is not entirely unexpected,” celebrated Nicholas Moore and three colleagues from the branch of pharmacology at the University of Bordeaux in southwestern France.

“Paracetamol has been up~ the body the market for as long for example most of us remember. It effectiveness has never been properly established or quantified in deep-seated diseases,” they wrote in a make notes, also published in The Lancet. — AFP
